Dettato is probably not for you if

  • You need studio-grade accuracy for legal or medical transcription. Dettato uses the speech engine on your phone, and it is good, not perfect.
  • You want automatic sync across devices. There is no cloud here, by design.
  • You need speaker labels for multi-person meetings. It does not do that.

It works with no signal

On-device transcription runs on your phone's own speech engine. Airplane mode, a basement, a plane at altitude: it still writes everything down. By default Dettato only ever uses the recognizer on your own phone, and if a language has no offline pack it saves the audio rather than sending your voice somewhere else. Offline voice notes, in the literal sense.

Questions

Isn't the recorder on my phone free?
It is, and for a quick voice memo it is often enough. Dettato is for when you want the words rather than the audio: a transcript you can edit, search across every memo you have made, and a Markdown file you can keep. The built-in recorders on most phones will not give you a file in your own notes vault.
Does my voice get uploaded?
No. Dettato has no server. By default it only uses the speech recognizer built into your phone, and if your language has no offline pack it saves the audio rather than sending it anywhere. The privacy page explains exactly how this works.
Does it really work with no signal?
Yes, once your language pack is installed. Airplane mode, underground, mid-flight.
What does Pro cost, and is it a subscription?
One payment, kept forever. There is no subscription and no account.
Which phones support the on-device AI summaries?
Recent flagship Android phones. On every other phone Dettato falls back to a summarizer that also runs entirely on the device, so the feature works everywhere, just more simply.
Can I get my audio out?
Yes, and that is free. Any memo can be saved as a WAV file wherever you choose.
